Charles Dickens' grandson, Major Cedric Charles Dickens, died during the Battle of the Somme. For many years, it was assumed that he was still buried in his original field grave near Combles but when it was opened in order that he be transferred to a cemetery, he could not be found. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
